Swamp Gardener: Palm Beach Gardens GreenMarket yields great organic discoveries

Sunday, April 16, 2006

When I was at the GreenMarket in Palm Beach Gardens recently, a person asked me where she could buy a fig tree in this area, and what kind were available.

Unfortunately, the M and O Nursery, where I used to buy fig trees, is no longer in operation — but I also heard that you could order trees through their business telephone address. I will check it out and let you know if this is true.

Among the highlights of my day at the GreenMarket was buying some heirloom tomatoes and finding a booth that has organically grown veggies. I'll talk to a tree if it "waves" at me, and that led me to have a long conversation with the people in the booth about their farm and veggies.

Sal and Holly Varri of Varri Green Farm have some fine produce and it's organic — no synthetics, pesticides, herbicides or fertilizes. They're my kind of people (and gardeners).

Varri Green Farm is located in Okeechobee and 4 of its 20 acres are dedicated to organic gardening.

You can reach them at

(863) 357-2747 (ask for Sal or Holly) or log on to varrigreenfarm.com.

I was impressed that they included natural fertilizers as part of their standards in growing. I have always stressed that the chemical synthetic fertilizers metabolite to a chlorine compound and over time, that metabolite will stunt your veggies (not to mention what it might do to you and your family). Therefore, I always use natural manure and compost in my growing process.
